After the disaster of 1991, WCW's run of bad luck appeared to continue when WCW Champion Lex Luger left the company to join Vince McMahon's bodybuilding league.  WCW would go onto hire "Cowboy" Bill Watts to run the company.  He brought an old-school toughness which didn't fit in well with the fans of the '90s as he banned moves off the top rope and brought back the National Wrestling Alliance name which led to the company having two world titles, the WCW and NWA World Championships.

While his booking ideas were from the past, he did one thing revolutionary.  When he crowned Ron Simmons champion, it marked the first time that an African American wrestler became the world heavyweight champion of a major wrestling promotion.
