1993 US Open: When Janzen Beat Stewart (the First Time)

Lee Janzen won two U.S. Opens, and both times he pipped Payne Stewart to do so. The 1993 U.S. Open was the site of the first of those two Janzen wins.

Janzen beat runner-up Stewart by two strokes here, shooting 69 to Stewart's 70 in the final round. Janzen's 272 total tied the U.S. Open scoring record of the time, and Janzen became just the second man in tournament history to shoot all four rounds in the 60s (Lee Trevino was the first to do so, in 1968).

Janzen led Stewart by one at the start of the final round, but they were tied when Janzen bogied the 12th hole. A birdie on the 14th put Janzen ahead by one again. And then either mishit the ball or misclubbed on the par-3 No. 16 on Baltusrol's Lower Course; his ball landed well short and in deep rough. Janzen was left with a downhill chip of 30-feet. And he drained it. Stewart's own birdie try, a long putt, just missed.

Janzen's drive on the 17th hit a tree, but the ball bounced into the fairway and he managed to make par. On the final hole, he drove into the rough but hit the green with his approach, then finished with a birdie to win by two.

Janzen had played the U.S. Open three times previously, and missed the cut in all three of those tournaments. Not a bad way to make your first cut, eh?

Janzen's 272 total tied the tournament scoring record established by Jack Nicklaus in the 1980 U.S. Open - which, coincidentally, was also played at Baltusrol.

That 272 mark was not bettered until the 2011 U.S. Open.
