1996 was a rough year for WWE.  The company lost two of their top stars, Diesel and Razor Ramon to their rivals, World Championship Wrestling.  Using them as the focal points of an "invasion" angle, the two men joined forces with Hulk Hogan to form the new World order.  That group revolutionized the sport and put WWE on the losing side of the Monday Night War.

Things weren't all bad for the company though.

A newcomer to the company, "The Ringmaster" made his debut.  Thankfully for the company, Steve Austin shed this horrible gimmick, became known as "Stone Cold" and uttered the phrase "Austin 3:16" which went onto become the top selling shirt in the company's history.  That November, a rookie named Rocky Maivia made his first appearance with the company.  He would later be known as The Rock.
