During the sixth century, Athens instituted direct democracy and developed drama, the pan-Hellenic Pythian, Isthmean, and Nemean games were instituted in Delphi, Corinth, and Nemea, in Greece, and the Romans launched their own mixed form of government after they expelled their Etruscan kings.

The Greco-Persian Wars were a couple of years away and Rome had yet to become a major player on the world scene.
