Confession time: Do you recollect your childhood when you really, really, wanted a toy that caught your fancy? Perhaps it was a doll house with Barbie. Perhaps it was a pen with disappearing ink? Or perhaps it was a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle, attached with a compass and sundial? I believe most of us have been through this phase. A Christmas Story delves into that forgotten recesses of your memory where you store your treasured memories of failed dreams and fantasies that never got fulfilled.

You have to be a child at heart to appreciate the nuances of A Christmas Story. This 1983 classic movie is meant for the holidays, especially for harried moms and dads, who can't understand why kids insist on a particular toy they so badly seem to want. A Christmas Story is not just about the festival of gifting; it is a humorous yet poignant reflection on childhood, fantasies, love and friendship.

Ralphie, the kid who plays the main character will steal your heart. He plays you, as you were during your growing up days. His dreams, frustrations, and ingenuity will remind you of a lost childhood. You will cheer his misdemeanours, and feel his pain when he is bullied and beaten down. And you will want to clap and cheer this plucky young boy, who works hard to earn his BB gun. Never mind the negative reactions of adults and Santa Claus, Ralphie knows what he wants and how to get it.

This movie was a creation of author Jean Shepherd, based on his humorous work: In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash.

Bob Clark's subtle direction shows in its excellent moments of humour. This movie is not just another holiday movie. It is integral to Christmas celebration. It is a well thought out American comedy which brings a nine-year old's agony in a lighthearted vein. Adult Ralphie

  • Oh, life is like that. Sometimes, at the height of our revelries, when our joy is at its zenith, when all is most right with the world, the most unthinkable disasters descend upon us.

  • First-nighters, packed earmuff-to-earmuff, jostled in wonderment before a golden, tinkling display of mechanized, electronic joy!

  • My little brother had not eaten voluntarily in over three years.

  • Only one thing in the world could've dragged me away from the soft glow of electric sex gleaming in the window.

  • Getting ready to go to school was like getting ready for extended deep-sea diving.

  • Scut Farkus! What a rotten name! We were trapped. There he stood, between us and the alley. Scut Farkus staring out at us with his yellow eyes. He had yellow eyes! So, help me, God! Yellow eyes!

  • Ho, ho, but no matter. Christmas was on its way. Lovely, glorious, beautiful Christmas, upon which the entire kid year revolved.

  • If Higbee thinks I'm working one minute past 9:00, he can kiss my foot. Ho ho ho.

  • That is... the ugliest lamp I have ever seen in my entire life!
