The Largest Cities in the World

The 30 Most Populous Urban Areas in the World

The world's largest urban area - Tokyo (37.8 million) - has a larger population than the entire country of Canada (35.3 million). Below you'll find a listing of the world's largest urban areas, known as urban agglomerations, based on data compiled by the United Nations Population Division.

The data on these 30 largest cities of the world is current as of 2014 and reflects the best possible estimates of the populations of these huge cities.

It is notoriously difficult to measure urban populations, especially in developing countries. Additionally, the rate of urban growth in some of the world's largest cities is very high and that dynamic population growth makes determining the "exact" population of a city difficult.

If you're wondering what these cities will look like in the future, scroll down to a second list that has a projection of the largest cities in the world in the year 2030.
