À Peu Près

The French expression à peu près (pronounced [ ah peu preh])indicates that whatever phrase it precedes or follows is a rough guess or estimate. It literally means "at little near" and is used to mean about, around, approximately, pretty much or more or less. When used with numbers and amounts, à peu près is synonymous with environ and plus ou moins. It has a normal register. 

Examples and Usage

• J'ai à peu près 10€ / J'ai 10€, à peu près.
• I have about 10€.

• Il pèse à peu près 20 kilos / Il pèse 20 kilos, à peu près.
• It weighs about 20 kilos.

• Tu as à peu près son âge / Tu as son âge, à peu près.
• You're about the same age as he is.

À peu près is used with adjectives, nouns, pronouns, and clauses to describe something or someone as "approximately, more or less ___." Here, à peu près is synonymous with presque and plus ou moins.

• Les résultats sont à peu près normaux.
• The results are fairly / more or less normal.

• Je suis à peu près certain.
• I'm fairly / almost certain.

• Ils sont à peu près les mêmes.
• They're about / almost the same.

• C'est à peu près tout.
• That's about / pretty much all.

• Je vois à peu près ce qu'il veut dire.
• I kind of / pretty much / more or less see what he means.

The invariable compound noun à-peu-près refers to a vague approximation. For example:

• rester dans l'à-peu-près
• to be very vague, to stick to vague approximations

• éviter les à-peu-près
• to avoid approximations
