Learn about our Editorial Process Updated on March 18, 2020 If you're planning to go to college in Hawaii, you'll find several options for both private and public institutions. The size, mission, and personality differs significantly from school to school, as does selectivity. The table below can help you figure out if your ACT scores are on target for admission to your top choice Hawaii colleges. ACT Scores for Hawaii Colleges (mid 50%) (Learn what these numbers mean) Composite25% Composite75% English25% English75% Math 25% Math 75% Brigham Young University-Hawaii 22 26 22 27 21 26 Chaminade University of Honolulu 19 23 17 23 17 23 Hawaii Pacific University — — — — — — University of Hawaii at Hilo 18 24 16 23 17 24 University of Hawaii at Manoa 20 26 20 26 20 26 University of Hawaii Maui College open-admissions open-admissions open-admissions open-admissions open-admissions open-admissions University of Hawaii-West Oahu — — — — — — The table shows ACT scores for the middle 50% of enrolled students. If your scores fall within or above these numbers, you're in a good position for admission. If your scores are a little below the bottom number, don't give up! Keep in mind that 25% of enrolled students have scores below those listed. Be sure to keep the ACT in perspective and remember that the exam is just one part of your college application process. A strong academic record with challenging classes will almost always carry more weight than standardized test scores. Also, some of the schools will look at non-numerical information and want to see a winning essay, meaningful extracurricular activities and good letters of recommendation. In some cases, a student with high scores but an overall weak application will be rejected or waitlisted. And, a student with lower scores but a solid application and who shows demonstrated interested will be admitted. It's also good to remember that you can always retake the exam if you're not happy with your scores. Make sure that there's enough time before your scores are due, however. In some cases, schools will let you submit your application with the lower scores, allowing you to replace those old scores with the newer (and ideally higher) new scores when they come in. Note that the SAT is more popular than the ACT in Hawaii, but all the schools will accept either exam. To view a profile for any of the schools listed here, just click on its name in the table above.
