1. The Raw Realness Of It All

Unlike tidy tarmac racing (like MotoGP, World Superbike, etc), AMA Pro Flat Track pits riders with angry machines on freshly packed clay in a gladiatorial free-for-all that reaches speeds of up to 140 mph. Competition is tight-- handlebar-to-handlebar duels are commonplace-- and the excitement is visceral, from the screaming sounds of the engines to the constant overtaking. Setup for corner entry is key, and jockeying for position often involves a battle of wills between similarly stubborn riders-- which makes for great racing.

The sport is broken down into two classes: Harley-Davidson GNC1 presented by Vance & Hines, and GNC2, which offers up-and-coming riders a chance to advance to the premier spot. GNC1's custom-built twins produce over 90 horsepower, while GNC2 features production-based 450cc singles. In 2017, big twins will be used exclusively in GNC1.

Flat track racing's roots go back to the 1920s, and according to the AMA, is currently one of the longest-running championships in the history of motorsports. The sport has spawned legends like Kenny Roberts, Wayne Rainey and Nicky Hayden, and has attracted the attention of MotoGP stars like Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi, the latter whom has set up his own flat track course on his property in Tavullia, Italy.

The Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Factory Team's first new bike in 44 years was just unveiled, and it looks to be a killer. Motivated by a fuel-injected, liquid-cooled Revolution X engine, this competition-only bike features a race-modded mill sourced from the Street 750. The XG750R will be campaigned by Davis Fisher, the 18-year-old racer who won the 2015 AMA Pro GNC2 championship.
