Annette O'Neil is a former writer for ThoughtCo with a focus on extreme sports, which she wrote about extensively for over two and a half years.
In the summer of 2008, O'Neil started the journey into "extreme" activities by taking a trip along the legendary mountain roads north of Los Angeles on a Kawasaki Ninja sportbike. A short time later, she met a skydiver in South Africa and signed up for her first tandem jump a few days later. Skydiving led quickly to paragliding, speed flying, and, finally, B.A.S.E. jumping.
In mid-2012, O'Neil became the first female, and one of the only athletes in general, to achieve BASE–building, antenna, span, and earth–in four consecutive jumps. She jumped from a bridge on the South African Garden Route, from a cliff near Cape Town, off a skyscraper in Istanbul, and from an antenna in Southern California. Since then, O'Neil has logged hundreds of B.A.S.E. jumps across four continents and earned the highest non-professional license in skydiving.
In between flights and jumps, O'Neil fine tunes her techniques by flying in a wind tunnel. Other activities also help her hone her skills, including rock climbing, skiing, slacklining, and stretching on a yoga mat. O'Neil writes a travel blog and contributes to numerous other publications. She and her partner are full-time location-independent digital nomads, traveling, living, working, jumping, and flying around the globe.
