Annette O'Neil is a former writer for ThoughtCo with a focus on extreme sports, which she wrote about extensively for over two and a half years.
O'Neil started her career as a video producer for commercial spots for clients like Toyota, Dell, Dirt Devil, Eggo, and the Travel Channel as well as music videos for artists like The Killers, Hot Hot Heat, Britney Spears, and Marilyn Manson. She still produces the Annie Awards, which celebrates the highest achievements in animation each year.
In the summer of 2008, O'Neil started the journey into "extreme" activities by taking a trip along the legendary mountain roads north of Los Angeles on a Kawasaki Ninja sportbike. Shortly thereafter, she met a skydiver in South Africa and signed up for her first tandem jump a few days later. Skydiving led quickly to paragliding, speed flying, and, finally, B.A.S.E. jumping.
In mid-2012, O'Neil jumped from a bridge in the South African garden route, a cliff near Cape Town, a skyscraper in Istanbul, and an antenna in Southern California. This sequence of four consecutive jumps made her the first female (and one of the only athletes in general) to achieve BASE—building, antenna, span, and earth—in just four jumps. Since then, O'Neil has logged hundreds of B.A.S.E. jumps across four continents and earned the highest non-professional license in skydiving.
In between flights and jumps, you'll find O'Neil flying in the wind tunnel, rock climbing, skiing, slacklining, and stretching on a yoga mat. She also writes for her own travel blog as well as a number of other publications. O'Neil and her partner travel full-time as location-independent digital nomads, living, working, jumping, and flying all over the world.
