Conjugating "Arrêter" (to Stop; to Arrest)

You use the verb arrêter to say "stop" in French. Arrêter is also used to say "arrest." It's a regular -er verb, and it's fairly easy to conjugate.

How to Conjugate the French Verb Arrêter

Because arrêter is a regular verb, you determine the stem by removing the -er from the infinitive and choose the ending based on the subject pronoun and which tense you're using. This chart will help you learn how to conjugate the verb arrêter.

How to Use Arrêter in the Past Tense

The most common way to use the past tense in French is the passé composé (it's a compound tense). You use the auxiliary verb avoir and the past participle arrêté to form the passé composé.

    The officers arrested me.
  • Elle a arrêté pour prendre un café.
    She stopped to get coffee.
