Austrian Men's Alpine Ski Racing Team

Led by two-time Overall FIS World Cup Champion Marcel Hirscher, the Austrian Alpine Ski Racing Team has a deep bench and totaled a whopping thirty-four podiums in 2013 World Cup competition. Hirscher, of course, did all the heavy lifting with six gold, ten silver and two bronze.

The other sixteen medals were scattered among Hannes Reichelt (one gold and three bronze), Georg Streitberger (two silver), Mario Matt (one silver, two bronze), Klaus Kroell (one silver, three bronze), Matthias Mayer (one silver), Max Franz (one silver) and Joachim Puchner (one bronze).

The Austrians also cashed at the hometown 2013 FIS World Ski Championships in Schladming, with Hirscher taking one gold and a silver, and Mario Matt and Romed Baumann each grabbing a bronze.

Even though the team had mined a lot of metal at the end of the 2013 season, only one other skier besides Overall Winner Marcel Hirscher was in the top ten Overall rankings. Obviously, the Austrian Men's Alpine Team has a mix of older warhorses and young guns, and it will be interesting to see how the team culls the ranks for Sochi. While there may be a lot of shakeups - and discontentment - in the 2013-14 season before the Olympics, I think this team is hard to dismiss as contenders in any discipline.
