Beaches attract tourists like magnets. Families, couples on their honeymoon and thrill seekers come to sunbathe, take part in watersports such as surfing, parasailing and bodyboarding, or often to simply stroll along the shore. Beaches vary dramatically in their size and use... while some beaches are tourist meccas, others are unspoiled wildernesses, meaning beaches are often as interesting as other favorite vacation destinations.

Here are a few interesting fun facts about beaches. Enjoy!

  • Many scientists believe that beaches are only a temporary phenomenon caused by the changes in sea levels after the last Ice Age.
  • The ocean covers 71% of the earth's surface.
  • The slope of a beach matches the waves, so the slope is often gentler in winter when the waves are stronger.
  • A storm beach is a ridge of gravel and pebbles flung high above the normal high-tide mark during a storm.
  • Beach cusps are tiny bays in the sand that are scooped out along the beach when waves strike it at an angle.
  • 90% of all volcanic activity occurs in the world's oceans.
  • A white cotton shirt is equivalent to SPF 7. But still not enough coverage, so don't forget to apply your sunscreen once you reach the wonderful shores of your favorite beach.
  • The largest sandcastle ever built, as of 2010, was 64 feet high and constructed on Fiesta Island, San Diego, California.
  • Virginia Beach, in the state of Virginia, features the longest pleasure beach in the world. Nicknamed Resort Strip, the pleasure beach runs for 30 miles.
  • The proportion of people that goto the beach that can't swim is roughly 1 out of 3.
  • Blue whales are the largest known animals on earth. Their hearts can reach the size of a small car.
  • A shrimp's heart is located in its head.
  • A group of jellyfish swimming together is called a smack.
  • Sharks have a 6th sense called electrosensory perception that allows them to detect electric fields.(No, they can't see dead people.
