Ben has been taking things apart since he was 5, and putting them back together again since he was 8. After dabbling in DIY repairs at home and on the farm, he found his calling in the CGCC Automobile Repair program. After maintaining his ASE CMAT for 10 years, Ben decided he needed a change. Now, he writes on automotive topics across the web and around the world, including new automotive technology, transportation legislation, emissions, fuel economy, and auto repair.
After graduating top of his class, in 2001, Ben put his AAS in Automobile Repair to good use, working in dealerships in Upstate New York. On graduation, Ben had already been ASE-Certified as a Master Automobile Repair Technician, which he kept in force for 10 years. The majority of his experience has been with Toyota and Lexus, but he also spent some time in an independent shop, specializing in Toyota, Lexus, Mazda, and Volvo.
As a technician, Ben worked in all aspects of maintenance, diagnosis, and repair, one of the elite, taking pride in a high fixed-first-visit ratio and exceptional customer service. He specialized in electrical and electronic systems diagnosis and repair, often called in on jobs that others were unable to successfully repair.
Interestingly, Ben was often called upon as a front man to help customers understand their vehicles and their service and repair options. On making the move to Freelance Writing, he's put this ability to use in explainer and how-to articles, making many complex automotive topics more understandable to drivers and DIYers.
