Discussion of Bennington College's Admissions Standards:

Bennington College, a small liberal arts college in a small town in Vermont, has test-optional admissions. This means that you should focus on GPA in the graph above much more than SAT and ACT scores. Standardized test scores are optional, so definitely submit them if they are strong. If you think they won't strengthen your application, there's no penalty for leaving them out. The graph above paints a portrait of the academic strengths of the typical students who is admitted to Bennington College. Most admitted students (the blue and green dots) had a high school GPA of a 3.2 or higher. The majority had grades up in the "A" range. Even though standardized test scores aren't required, you'll see that most admitted students had above average scores. Combined SAT scores (RW+M) were mostly above 1200, and composite ACT scores were mostly above 25. Admissions are holistic, so you'll find some applicants who were rejected with grades and test scores above these lower ranges, and a few students were admitted with sub-par numbers.

Bennington has two paths to admission: the Common Application, and the Dimensional Application.  Students who apply using the Common Application will want to have a winning application essay, meaningful extracurricular activities, positive letters of recommendation from teachers in at least two academic areas, a graded analytical essay, a guidance counselor recommendation, and a completed Bennington supplement to the Common Application. Applicants are also welcome and encouraged to submit supplemental materials and/or portfolio, and to do an optional interview. Roughly a third of all applicants are rejected, so it is clearly to your advantage to provide as complete a portrait of yourself as possible.

The Dimensional Application is a less traditional approach to the admissions process. Bennington will be looking for evidence of your "ability to articulate original ideas or insights," a "record of academic achievement," a "capacity for growth," your "intrinsic motivation," and ways that you have made "contributions to your classroom and community." Bennington will be attempting to assess traits such as a "tolerance for ambiguity," a "facility for collaboration," "self-reflection" and "self-restraint," and aesthetic and cultural sensitivity. As with the Common Application applicants, you will be encouraged to do an interview with a member of the admissions staff. The way in which you choose to demonstrate these character traits is entirely up to you. The Dimensional Application can be approached in many different ways, and that's part of the point: the application will highlight both your creativity and the ways in which you approach a challenge.
