Best Law Schools in Florida

Florida is home to eleven law schools accredited by the American Bar Association. The five schools on our list tend to top the state rankings based on factors like academic offerings, faculty research expertise, selectivity, job placement, and bar passage rates.

Three of the law schools on this list are public. Unlike many states, Florida's public universities offer significantly lower law school tuition for in-state students. Florida residents who attend a public law school typically pay less than half of what students pay at private institutions.

University of Florida

The University of Florida Levin College of Law is the most selective law school in Florida, and with close to 1,000 students, it is also the largest. Students at UF Law are supported by over 80 full-time faculty members, 50 adjunct professors, and the largest law library in the Southeast. The campus sits on the western edge of the University of Florida's main campus in Gainesville, so students have ready access to all of the academic, cultural, and social opportunities found at the large, highly ranked public university.

UF Law places significant emphasis on experiential learning on and off campus through on-campus clinical work, a courtroom-classroom, summer externships, and more. Second- and third-year law students may choose to concentrate in one of the following specialty programs: Environmental and Land Use Law, Estate Planning, Family Law, Intellectual Property Law, and Criminal Justice.

Florida State University

The Florida State University College of Law is located in Tallahassee, the capital of Florida. The campus is located mere blocks away from the Florida Capitol, the Florida Supreme Court, and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida, all of which offer students opportunities to gain real-world experience through clerking and internships. FSU Law students can also gain hands-on experiences through the school's Business Law Clinic and Public Interest Law Center.

FSU Law's bar passage rate is consistently over 80%—one of the highest passage rates in the state of Florida. The school also ranks No. 1 in Florida for the number of graduates employed full-time within 10 months of graduation, according to The National Law Journal. Part of this success comes from 900 alumni who serve as Career Mentors.

University of Miami

Located in Coral Gables, Florida, the University of Miami School of Law celebrates diversity with students from 38 states, 124 undergraduate schools, and 64 undergraduate majors. 58% of students speak at least one foreign language, and 50% identify as a member of a diverse group. Miami Law's 20,000+ alumni span all 50 states and 91 countries.

Miami Law offers over 300 distinct courses annually. The student/faculty ratio is 7 to 1, and class sizes are small. Outside the classroom, law students can obtain hands-on experience at ten different clinics, including the Environmental Justice Clinic, Health Rights Clinic, Innocence Clinic, and Tenants' Rights Clinic.

Miami Law is home to two prestigious Moot Courts and a rigorous Litigation Skills Program. Students interested in focusing on a particular area of law can can choose from concentrations such as Immigration, Asylum and Citizenship Law and Business of Innovation, Law and Technology.

Stetson University

Founded in 1900, the Stetson University College of Law is Florida's oldest law school. Stetson Law is part of Stetson University, but the law school does not share the university's Deland location. Instead, Stetson Law is located across the state in Gulfport with a satellite campus in downtown Tampa, where it shares space with Florida's Second District Court of Appeal. Stetson Law leverages its location to provide students with clinical and experiential learning opportunities.

Public service is important at Stetson Law. All students and faculty are required to provide pro bono service, and the school has been ranked No. 1 by U.S. News & World Report for trial advocacy. Clinics include the Child Advocacy Clinic, Civil Elder Law Clinic, Immigration Law Clinic, Public Defender Clinic, and an in-house Veteran's Advocacy Clinic.

Florida International University

Located on Florida International University's main campus in Miami, FIU College of Law is a relatively young school that received full American Bar Association in 2006. Since then, the school has flourished, and today it enrolls a diverse population of close to 500 students.

FIU Law offers numerous experiential learning opportunities, including the Semester-in-Practice (SIP) program. Through SIP, law students spend a full semester gaining hands-on legal experience at a private firm, nonprofit, corporation, legal services organization, or government agency. FIU law students can also develop their client representation skills through the clinical program. Clinic options include the Death Penalty Clinic, the Immigration and Human Rights Clinic, and the Community Lawyering Clinic.
