Brooks is a novelist with writer's block who returns home to work out his issues with his mom after coming to the realization that all of his romantic failures can be traced back to that pivotal relationship.

The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)

40 Year-Old Virgin
Universal Pictures

Although this movie is all about a 40 year old guy (played by Steve Carell) who hasn't ever had sex, there's a sweet love story in here that's surprisingly touching for an R-rated comedy. Catherine Keener co-stars as the mom who finds love with the very shy, very polite, and very much a virgin, electronics salesman.

Frankie's mom writes him letters pretending to be his father, but that imaginative scheme hits a snag when the boat her ex is working on in her letters is actually due to make port nearby. Lizzie hires a stranger (Butler) to masquerade as her ex for a few days, but complications arise when Lizzie and this handsome man hit it off.

Knocked Up (2007)

Knocked Up
Universal Pictures

Okay, so it wasn't love that got wannabe TV personality Allison (Katherine Heigl) and slacker Ben (Seth Rogen) together, but rather alcohol-induced lust. Still, Knocked Up is a love story at heart -- albeit one that approaches the romance from a very unorthodox angle.
