Beverly Oden has over 20 years of volleyball experience. She is the youngest of the three Oden sisters, each of whom played in the Olympics as starting middle blockers.
Beverly began playing volleyball at the age of 13. She went on to play in high school where she led Irvine High to back-to-back California State Championships. She was the number one recruit out of high school and chose to attend Stanford University where she was named NCAA player of the year in 1990 and won an NCAA title her senior year in 1992. She graduated with a degree in Psychology and then played for the USA Volleyball team full-time.
Beverly was the starting middle blocker along with sister Elaina for the Atlanta Olympics. She also played beach volleyball on the Bud Light 4-Person Pro Tour and was named Rookie of the Year.
After retiring from volleyball, Beverly worked as a reporter for Sports Illustrated, for local and national news programs, as an associate producer for Fox Sports and in production for independent documentary films.
Beverly earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Stanford in 1993. She went on to earn her master's degree in Journalism with an emphasis on documentary film from UC Berkeley in 2001.
My sports career started in softball and soccer. I was a decent Bobby Sox first baseman with a home run swing, but I soon noticed that I had to play all season to come home with one trophy at the end of it all. On the other hand, my sisters, Kim and Elaina came home with a trophy every weekend from their many club volleyball tournaments. That was all it took for me to make the switch.
Though it was very difficult following in the footsteps of my sisters who quickly made a name for themselves in the sport, I muddled through. I was fortunate to earn a scholarship to Stanford and to win a national championship there.
I trained with the 1992 Barcelona Olympic team but was one of the last cuts and did not join my sisters in that Olympics. Four years later, I was a proud member of the USA Volleyball team in Atlanta. Playing volleyball opened many doors for me and allowed me to travel all over the world. Now I am ready to share what I learned with you.
