Bible Verses on Hearing God

Christians often talk about listening to God, but what does that mean?  There are a number of Bible verses on hearing God and how His voice influences our lives.  When we talk about hearing God, so many people picture a burning bush or a voice calling down from heaven.  Yet there are a number of ways that God speaks to us and reinforces our faith:

God Speaks to Us
God speaks to each  of us in numerous ways.

Sure, Moses was lucky enough to get the in-your-face burning bush.  It doesn’t always happen that way for each of us.  Sometimes we hear Him in our heads.  Other times it could be from someone speaking to us or a verse in the Bible that catches our eye.  Hearing God shouldn’t be limited to our way of thinking, because God is limitless.

John 10:27
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me  (NASB)

Isaiah 30:21
And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.  (ESV)

John 16:13
The Spirit shows what is true and will come and guide you into the full truth. The Spirit doesn’t speak on his own. He will tell you only what he has heard from me, and he will let you know what is going to happen.  (CEV)

Jeremiah 33:3
Ask me, and I will tell you things that you don’t know and can’t find out. (CEV)

2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

  (NIV)

Hebrews 1:1-5
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.

After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.  (NIV)

Faith and Hearing God
Faith and hearing God goes hand in hand.  When we have faith, we are more likely open to hearing God.  In fact, we tend to welcome it.  Hearing God then reinforces our faith even more.  It’s a cycle that only makes us stronger.

John 8:47
Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God. But you don’t listen because you don’t belong to God.  (NLT)

John 6:63
The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.  (NLT)

Luke 11:28
But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” (NKJV)

Romans 8:14
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.  (NIV)

Hebrews 2:1
We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.  (NIV)

Psalm 85:8
Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly.  (ESV)
