Bible Verses on Helping Others

Helping others is something we’re all called to do.  From outreach efforts to volunteering, the Bible reminds us that helping others is an important part of our Christian walk.

It’s the Right Thing to Do
There are plenty of examples in the Bible of why helping others is the right thing to do.  God calls us to do more than just think of ourselves.

Galatians 6:2
Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.

(NLT)

Romans 15:1
We who are strong must be considerate of those who are sensitive about things like this. We must not just please ourselves. (NLT)

John 15:13
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. (NIV)

Proverbs 3:27
Do all you can for everyone who deserves your help. (CEV)

Acts 20:35
By everything I did, I showed how you should work to help everyone who is weak. Remember that our Lord Jesus said, “More blessings come from giving than from receiving.” (CEV)

Acts 4:32-35
The group of followers all felt the same way about everything. None of them claimed that their possessions were their own, and they shared everything they had with each other. In a powerful way the apostles told everyone that the Lord Jesus was now alive. God greatly blessed his followers, and no one went in need of anything. Everyone who owned land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the apostles.

Then they would give the money to anyone who needed it. (CEV)

Romans 12:13
Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. (NIV)

Luke 10:27
He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ (NIV)

Romans 12:10
Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; [a]give preference to one another in honor. (NASB)

Matthew 25:35-40
For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ (NLT)

It’s Pleasing to God
God is pleased when we live by His word and help one another.  Here are some Bible verses that remind us of how pleasing us helping those around us is to Him.

Hebrews 13:16
Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. (ESV)

John 15:12
This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. (NKJV)

1 John 3:17
But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

(NKJV)

James 2:14-17
My friends, what good is it to say you have faith, when you don’t do anything to show that you really do have faith? Can that kind of faith save you? If you know someone who doesn’t have any clothes or food, you shouldn’t just say, “I hope all goes well for you. I hope you will be warm and have plenty to eat.” What good is it to say this, unless you do something to help? Faith that doesn’t lead us to do good deeds is all alone and dead! (CEV)

Mark 10:21
Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (NLT)

Luke 3:10-11
“What should we do then?” the crowd asked. John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.” (NIV)

1 Timothy 5:8
Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. (NIV)

Philippians 4:19
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. (ESV)
