Ever since Bryan Fuller was announced as the new showrunner for the upcoming Star Trek TV series in 2017, a groundswell of support has risen up for the lead of the show. Fuller publicly stated he would want Angela Bassett as the captain of any future show, and we want to help make it happen.

On November 2, 2015, announced a new Star Trek series coming in January 2017. The first episode will air on standard CBS television.

But after that (in the United States at least), the only place to see the new TV series will be CBS All Access. CBS All Access is CBS' exclusive streaming service, which provides unlimited streaming of a variety of CBS TV shows from the past and present like CSI: Miami or MacGyver. It also streams live CBS television, and all of the six previous Star Trek TV series, from the original series to Enterprise. CBS All Access is available on, in apps for Android, iOS, Android and Windows 10, and other connected devices like Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, and Roku players.

In 2013 (before becoming an executive producer on the new show), Fuller described his idea for a new Trek show on Den of Geek, saying he would not have the show set on another version of the Enterprise. Instead, he would set his series on the USS Reliant. Fans know the Reliant as the ship hijacked and ultimately destroyed by Khan Noonien Singh in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn.

He also said his choice of captain would be Angela Bassett, and Rosario Dawson as the First Officer.

The response to the suggested casting has been enthusiastic. Organizations and websites from the AV Club to The Mary Sue have spoken out to encourage the casting. A new hashtag #CaptainAngelaBassett has sprung up on Twitter.

Angela Bassett herself has retweeted posts about it. Here at, we want to take action to make it more than just a dream.

Star Trek began as a groundbreaking series with its ethnic diversity and gender equality. Gene Roddenberry cast a black woman (Nichelle Nichols) as a member of the bridge crew when both women and African-Americans were a rarity on television. In 1995, Star Trek: Voyager broke ground again by having a woman (Kate Mulgrew) as Kathryn Janeway, the first Starfleet captain to lead a Trek show. In 1993, Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) became the first black Starfleet captain to lead a show on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. But progress stalled with Scott Bakula as white male Captain Archer on Star Trek: Enterprise.

But there's hope of making more progress. Now that Fuller has been named as executive producer on the upcoming Star Trek show, this is the time to bring a black woman to the lead of a new Trek show.

Angela Bassett is an American actress and film director, best known for her Academy Award-nominated performance as Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do With It. She also appeared in Malcolm X as Betty Shabazz, and played Rosa Parks in The Rosa Parks Story. Recently, Bassett has had a recurring role on multiple seasons of American Horror Story.

I've created a petition on to call on Bryan Fuller, David Stapf (President, CBS Television Studios), and Marc DeBevoise (Executive Vice President/General Manager of CBS Digital Media) to cast Angela Bassett as the captain of the starship on the Star Trek 2017 TV series. Sign the petition now!
