Pop star Christina Aguilera made her big screen debut starring in the 2010 musical film Burlesque. Aguilera starred as Ali Rose, a young woman who moves to Los Angeles and starts a career as a burlesque performer. The movie also is remembered for being the feature film comeback of Cher, who plays Tess, a seasoned performer. The talented twosome not only star in the film but also bring the soundtrack alive with their performances, with Aguilera singing eight of the tracks and Cher singing the other two.

The two songs by Cher were her first new recordings in seven years since her 2003 album Living Proof.

Though the film had a lukewarm reception at the box office (however, it was a strong seller on DVD), the soundtrack was arguably more successful. The album received two nominations at the 54th Grammy Awards, and the song "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" was nominated for and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in 2011 ("Bound to You" was also nominated for the same award). Four of Aguilera songs are covers -- "Something's Got a Hold on Me" and "Tough Lover" were both originally performed by Etta James, "Guy What Takes His Time" was originally performed by screen legend Marlene Dietrich, and "The Beautiful People" is an unlikely cover of Marilyn Manson's 1996 hit.

The Burlesque soundtrack was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America for selling over 500,000 copies in the United States.

Burlesque Synopsis

Ali (Christina Aguilera) is a small-town girl with a big voice who escapes hardship and an uncertain future to follow her dreams to LA. After stumbling upon The Burlesque Lounge, a majestic but ailing theater that is home to an inspired musical revue, Ali lands a job as a cocktail waitress from Tess (Cher), the club’s proprietor and headliner. Burlesque’s outrageous costumes and bold choreography enrapture the young ingenue, who vows to perform there one day.

Soon enough, Ali builds a friendship with a featured dancer (Julianne Hough), finds an enemy in a troubled, jealous performer (Kristen Bell), and garners the affection of Jack (Cam Gigandet), a bartender and fellow musician. With the help of a sharp-witted stage manager (Stanley Tucci) and gender-bending host (Alan Cumming), Ali makes her way from the bar to the stage. Her spectacular voice restores The Burlesque Lounge to its former glory, though not before a charismatic entrepreneur (Eric Dane) arrives with an enticing proposal…
