Known as Philadelphia Bible University until 2012, the university changed its name in an effort to better reflect the breadth of the school's academic offerings. The name is metaphorical, using the image of stone trail markers (cairns) to signify the university's efforts to direct students on the proper path. Cairn takes its Christian identity seriously (see the school's Statement of Faith), and faith and Biblical teachings are important components of a Cairn education regardless of major. Biblical Studies is by far the largest major at Cairn. At the undergraduate level, academics are supported by a 13 to 1 student / faculty ratio and an average class size of 18. Students come from 26 countries and 35 states. Campus life is active with a wide range of student groups including a poetry club, outdoor activities club, student newspaper, and many other options. On the athletic front, the Cairn University Highlanders compete in the NCAA Division III Colonial States Athletic Conference. The university fields six men's and six women's intercollegiate teams. Students can also participate in several intramural sports as well as one-day tournaments in activities such a ping pong, broom ball, and staff vs. students flag football.
