Cats have captured people's attention and admiration throughout history for the elegant grace and air of mystery that they project. People sometimes see cats appear before them to deliver spiritual messages.

They may encounter angels manifesting in the form of a cat, see images of a beloved pet who has died, and now they believe is acting as a spirit guide to them, or catch sight of cat images that symbolize something God wants to communicate to them (known as animal totems).

Or, they may receive extraordinary inspiration from God simply through their ordinary interactions with the cats in their lives.

If you're open to receiving spiritual messages through cats, here's how God may use them to send messages to you:

Angels Appearing as Cats

Angels are pure spirits and can manifest in the physical realm by taking on the form a cat whenever doing so would help them best accomplish their God-given missions, believers say.

"Angels sometimes ‘assume’ bodies, as we would put on a costume," writes Peter Kreeft in his book "Angels and (Demons): What Do We Really Know About Them?." He notes that at other times angels influence our imaginations and we see them in a body, but there isn't anything there. Kreft writes that he wonders whether his guardian angel may sometimes inhabit the body of his pet cat, especially when he is very sad.

Cats as Departed Pets Who Are Now Spirit Guides

Sometimes cats who have nurtured strong bonds with their human companions on Earth and then die, appear to those humans from the afterlife to deliver some spiritual guidance, say believers.

In her book, "Animals in Spirit: Our Faithful Companions' Transition to the Afterlife," Penelope Smith writes: "Why would an animal come back to the same person? Sometimes it’s to continue their mission to help, guide, and serve. Some animal friends feel you can’t do without them! One cat told me 17 years was not enough time to take care of her human companion and make sure she became enlightened.

She would need at least another 17 years, so she appeared again in cat form to continue her task."

Beloved pets who return to the people with whom they lived on Earth are often simply continuing their earthly missions of inspiring people, writes Smith. "Our animal friends are often our spiritual guides in life, helping us through hard times and teaching us about love and joy. They are often quite aware of their purpose and may continue to take care of us from the spiritual realm."

Cats as Symbolic Animal Totems

Cats may also appear in the form of totems, an image that conveys a symbolic spiritual message, believers say.

Totem animals in the form of cats often symbolize personal power, writes Gerina Dunwich in her book "Your Magickal Cat: Feline Magic, Lore, and Worship." People who practice spiritual magic (such as pagans, Wiccans, and those who follow the occult), celebrate cats for how they symbolize power. Dunwich writes: "Since times most ancient, cats have been a vital part of the magickal arts and have left their mark (or should I say “claw mark”) on the world of divination, folk healing, and occult sciences."

In any form, a cat "can serve as a calm, cool, collected guide who helps us to find and concentrate on our own creative magick," writes Ellen Dugan in her book, "The Enchanted Cat: Feline Fascinations, Spells & Magick."

Cats as Inspiration in Your Everyday Life

You don't have to see a cat in spiritual form in order to derive spiritual inspiration from it; you can gain plenty of inspiration simply from observing and interacting with the cats who are part of your regular, physical life, say believers.

In their book "Angel Cats: Divine Messengers Of Comfort," Allen and Linda C. Anderson ask: "With their willingness to listen in silence and their frank, nonjudgmental gaze, do they assure us that no matter what is happening, everything truly is in Divine order? When they skitter around our homes with abandon or calculatingly stalk invisible prey, are they reminding us to approach life’s challenges with creativity and flexibility? Is there something so extraordinarily spiritual about the cat kingdom that, if we observe, recognize, and apply what cats know, we can become more joyful, balanced, and loving human beings?"
