This quick and easy step by step shows you how to find the center of a square or rectangle in perspective. Once you've learned this simple trick, you can use it to evenly space building features like tiles, bricks and windows, or position a door or roof.

First, draw your square or rectangle in perspective. This might represent a floor, or wall, the side of a building or box. This method works for both one-point and two-point perspective.

Then, draw two lines joining the corners of the box diagonally as shown. Where they cross is the center of your rectangle.

Now line up your ruler so it meets the center of the square where the diagonals cross, and draw an orthogonal or "vanishing line" through it to your vanishing point and extend it to the front of the box. Now you have the center of the front and back sides of your rectangle, dividing it neatly in half.

If you draw a vertical straight through the center, you'll have the box divided into half vertically as well.

Now you can erase your construction lines if you wish, leaving your rectangle or square neatly divided into quarters.

You can repeat the steps with the divided rectangle to create smaller and smaller divisions, as shown. When using this method repeatedly, I usually only draw just enough of the diagonal to mark the center, to avoid having too many lines messing up the drawing.
