Discussion of Central Washington University's Admissions Standards:

Central Washington University is a mid-sized public university. Its location in a small city near the Cascade Mountains makes it a good choice for outdoor lovers. Admission to CWU isn't overly selective, and most hard-working high school students shouldn't have much difficulty being admitted. The graph above presents data for students who were admitted, rejected, and waitlisted. You can see that admitted students (the blue and green dots) tend to have high school GPAs of a 2.7 (a "B-") or better. Standardized test scores tend to be average. For the SAT, most admitted students were in the 900 to 1300 range (RW+M). Most composite ACT scores for admitted students were in the 16 to 27 range. The more your scores are above the lower end of these ranges, the better your chances of admission will be. Note, however, that a few students were accepted with grades and test scores a bit below the norm.

Students who have a 3.0 GPA and who have completed the appropriate college preparatory curriculum (four years of English and math, three years of social sciences, and two years of science and foreign language) will typically be admitted unless their applications are incomplete, they are somehow ineligible to attend, or their SAT/ACT scores are well below the expected range. Note that students who have a 3.4 GPA or better and who have taken the required college preparatory courses will be admitted regardless of their ACT or SAT scores. For students who don't have the recommended courses or who have a GPA below a 3.0, Central Washington University will conduct a more thorough review of the applicant to look for signs that the applicant has the potential to succeed in college (the university has an admissions process that is partially holistic). This review includes consideration of standardized test scores as well as responses to questions about how past experiences affected your GPA, what efforts you are making to succeed in school, and what your academic goals are. Be sure to put time and care into these short essays if your grades, standardized test scores, and/or core curriculum aren't ideal (these essay tips can help). Also note that CWU encourages applicants to include information about leadership experiences in these essays--such information helps reveal your character and gives the admissions folks more confidence in your ability to persist in college. The school's basic application does not ask about extracurricular activities, so the written section of the application allows you to show off your accomplishments on the extracurricular front.
