The Cheapest SSL Extended Validation (EV) Certificates

Where to Get "The Green Box" Validating Your Company

I have evaluated over 80 different SSL certificate services from 15 different certificate authorities (CA). I wrote another article Cheapest SSL Certificates, but when I updated it this year, none of the EV certificates made the list.

Extended Validation or EV certificates is a certificate that verifies both your domain and your company. It's the highest level of certification you can get for a website. It's very important for sites like banks and any others dealing with a lot of money or securities. When a site has an EV certificate, the URL will be displayed with a green box and your company name right in the browser.

Below, I've listed the ten cheapest CAs that offer EV service.

All prices are based on their prices for 1 year of service, paid annually. Many CAs will offer discounts (sometimes very significant ones) for multi-year purchases. I evaluated all the certificates on the following criteria:

  • Speed to issue
  • Provide a seal
  • Wildcard SLL support
  • Warranty
  • Refund policy

These certificates all offer 99% or higher browser support as well as a secured by seal.

My Recommendation - Limited Use

This certificate doesn't have an extremely high warranty and there isn't a lot of information on the website about the issuance time or any refunds. Also, when I checked out the site, my browser (Chrome) did not recognize their authority, so you might have trouble with other browsers. More »

My Recommendation - Add On to GoDaddy Services

If you already have a GoDaddy hosting or DNS account, then adding SSL with them is easy. They offer a very low warranty, but if you want to keep all your things in one place, GoDaddy offers many services. They also reduced their warranty at a time when other CAs are increasing warranties. More »

My Recommendation - Very Fast Issuance

I have trouble believing that they can issue an EV certificate as fast as they say, but their site states "with DigiCert’s validation specialists working nearly 24/7, we can typically issue an extended validation SSL Certificate within a few hours." If you need an EV certificate quickly, this is a good choice. More »

GeoTrust.

My Recommendation - High Warranty Outside a Reseller

While NameCheap offers resold options of Comodo products with a higher warranty, this is the highest warranty purchased directly from a certificate authority. So if you want the GeoTrust name and business as well as a high warranty, this is a good choice. More »
