Cheers for Cheerleaders: 'Pride'

Add this cheer to your team’s collection!

Add New Cheers to your Team’s Collection

Are your go-to cheers feeling a bit overdone? It’s always a good idea to add new cheers to your team’s collection throughout the year to keep your team and your fans motivated and shouting loud. If you are looking for a new cheer to learn, look no further.

‘Pride’ is an old favorite of mine which can be used to cheer on a sports team or to jazz up a competition team while they are waiting to take the mats.

It can be performed with or without motions to suit your needs and the team name and mascot can be easily changed.

Check out the words and choreography shown here. I have included motions for a team of three or more with three separate counts to create a ripple effect at some parts of the cheer, but you can come up with your own choreography if you like. This cheer would also look great adding in jumps, stunts, such as a prep or basket toss, some standing back handsprings, or by using poms or signs for more effect.

First learn the words—and remember an ‘x’ means pause.

‘Pride’

Explode x ignite x

SEC is here to fight

The time is now, this is our year

So come on, Sharks—let’s cheer!

We’ve got the spirit, we’ve got the pride

The teal, silver, and white x

Sharks Elite Cheer x

We’re number one—that’s right!

The words of this cheer can easily be changed to suit your team’s name and color. If you team only has two colors instead of three, add a pause in to balance out the rhythm.

For example: The red x and white x

If your team does not have white as a color, you can leave it of completely and not worry that it doesn’t rhyme with ‘that’s right’ in the last line, or you can add the word ‘unite’ to the end.

For example: The blue and yellow unite x

Now that you know the words, let’s learn some motions!

This has been choreographed for multiples of three cheerleaders to allow for ripples and effects, but you can change the choreography however you would like to.

Here we go!

This cheer starts with three cheerleaders in a triangle formation, standing in ‘clean’ position with their feet together and their arms at their sides. We will call the cheerleader at the point of the triangle ‘Cheerleader A’, the cheerleader to the left of her ‘Cheerleader B’, and the cheerleader to her right ‘Cheerleader C’.

 ‘Ex-‘

Cheerleader A: With her feet still together, the cheerleader bends her knees and tucks her arms in to pull her body into a ball shape.

Cheerleaders B & C: Both cheerleaders hold the clean position.

 ‘-plode’

Cheerleader A: The cheerleader pops into a straddle position with her arms in a High V.

Cheerleaders B & C: Both cheerleaders continue to hold their clean position.

 ‘Ig-‘

Cheerleader A: The cheerleader holds her position.

Cheerleaders B & C: The cheerleaders keep their feet together and bend their knees, tucking their arms in to pull into a ball shape.

 ‘-nite’

Cheerleader A: The cheerleader holds her ‘X’ position.

Cheerleaders B & C: Both cheerleaders pop into a straddle position with their arms in a High V.

‘SE‘

All Cheerleaders: All cheerleaders roll their arms from the High V to a Low V by bending their arms at the elbows. Their fists should swing down toward the body and then up toward the head as their elbows drop before opening up into the Low V position.

‘C’

All Cheerleaders: On ‘C’, all of the cheerleaders will hit a strong Low V position.

‘Is here’

All Cheerleaders: All cheerleaders do two clasps, one on each word.

‘To fight’

All cheerleaders: All cheerleaders hit a High Punch motion. The move their left hand to the Hands on Hip position and extend their right arm into the air with their hand in a fist and their arm held close to their ear.

‘The time’

All Cheerleaders: Step to the right and bring their arms down into a Low V with their hands in fists.

‘Is now’

All Cheerleaders: Bring their left foot to meet their right and clasp their hands.

‘This is’

All Cheerleaders: Step their left foot to the side and again, bring their arms down to a Low V with hands in fists.

‘Our year’

All Cheerleaders: Step their right foot together with their left foot and clasp their hands.

‘So come on,’

All Cheerleaders: All cheerleaders step forward on their right foot. They leave their hips and the toes of both feet facing the left, but turn their upper body to face front and hit a Low V motion.

‘Sharks’

All Cheerleaders: Keeping their feet and hips still, the cheerleaders wrap their arms around their waists with the right arm in front of their body and the left arm behind their body. They turn their upper bodies toward the back and look backwards.

‘Let’s cheer’

All Cheerleaders: In one motion, the cheerleaders step forward with their left foot to bring both feet together, turn to face the front, and hit a High V motion.

‘We’ve got’

All Cheerleaders: Step to the right and bring their arms down into a Low V with their hands in fists.

‘The spirit’

All Cheerleaders: Bring their left foot to meet their right and clasp their hands.

‘We’ve got’

All Cheerleaders: Step their left foot to the side and again, bring their arms down to a Low V with hands in fists.

‘The pride’

All Cheerleaders: Step their right foot together with their left foot and clasp their hands.

‘The teal’

Cheerleaders A & C: These two cheerleaders hold their positions—feet together, hands clasped.

Cheerleader B: This cheerleader steps her right foot to a straddle position and puts her hands in Hands on Hips.

‘Silver’

Cheerleader A: Steps her right foot to the straddle position and brings her arms to Hands on Hips.

Cheerleader B: Holds her position.

Cheerleader C: Holds her position.

‘And white’

Cheerleader A: Holds her position.

Cheerleader B: Holds her position.

Cheerleader C: Steps her right foot to the straddle position and brings her arms to Hands on Hips.

‘Sharks’

All Cheerleaders: Keep their feet in straddle and clasp their hands.

‘Elite’

All Cheerleaders: Keep their feet in straddle and clasp their hands a second time.

Cheer’

All Cheerleaders: Staying in straddle, all three cheerleaders place their right hand on their hips in a Hands on Hips motion and their left arm down at a diagonal as in a Low V.

‘We’re number one’

All Cheerleaders: Keep their feet and right arm still and circle their left arm across their body and up into an extended diagonal position, like half of a High V.

‘That’s right!’

All Cheerleaders: Bend their extended arm at the elbow to place their hand behind their head and flick their ponytail. Their extended arm should return to that half High V position with the hand in attitude.

Want to make this cheer even better? Have a look at these tips:

Tip #1    Get creative with your formations!

This cheer could be performed using lines in windows for larger groups or groups who are not in multiples of threes, by having the middle line do the part of Cheerleader A while the front is Cheerleader B and the back line is Cheerleader C.

Or arrange your team in a large triangle formation with the first 2 lines as Cheerleader B, the second 2 as Cheerleader A, and the last 2 as Cheerleader C.

Tip #2    Make the cheer yours!

Don’t be afraid to change around the choreography or add to it. Add props, jumps, stunts (toe touch baskets on ‘Explode’ & ‘Ignite’ would be spectacular), or tumbling (a standing back handspring would be great) to make the cheer more exciting for your audience.
