In Chinese culture, names are very important. A good name can bring respect to its bearer, but a bad name will bring misfortune and a hard life. The characters that make up a person’s name have to be chosen carefully so that they complement each other and follow certain astrological rules.

Chinese names are usually made up of three characters. The family name is the first character, and the remaining two characters are the given name.

Sometimes, especially in Mainland China, the given name is just one character.

Chinese parents have a great responsibility when they choose a name for their baby girl. The name must be harmonious and the characters must combine in such a way as to bring good luck and prosperity to their daughter.

Choosing a Name

Traditionally, parents would use the services of a fortune teller or an astrologer to suggest a good name for their baby girl. The fortune teller considers the date and time of birth and the surname of the father since children always take their father’s family name.

Astrological charts determine which of the five elements (gold, wood, water, fire and earth) are associated with the time of birth. Then, a name must be chosen which is in harmony with these elements. The elements also have to harmonize with the family name.

Each Chinese character is associated with a particular element, so the fortune teller is trying to create a name with an ideal combination of elements, such as Gold, Earth, Fire.

The fortune teller also has to consider the number of strokes which are used to draw the Chinese characters. After considering all these details, the fortune teller may suggest several names, and the parents must choose one they think is appropriate. A similar process is considered when choosing a name for a boy.

Meaning of Names

As you can see, picking a Chinese name for a baby girl is not a simple matter. In addition to all the astrological considerations, most parents want their baby girl to have a feminine-sounding name. This is done by including characters with meanings such as beauty, elegance, kindness, flowers, and virtues.

Most Chinese characters have a meaning that can be translated into English, but Chinese names are not usually translatable. The characters are chosen for their significance and harmony, but the combined characters usually don’t have a meaning, any more than the English name Sally, for example, has a discernible meaning.
