Learn about our Editorial Process Updated on May 15, 2019 Christmas falls on December 25th every year and is the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. The word Nativity refers to birth and the circumstances surrounding the birth. According to the Bible, Jesus was born in a manger or stable because the city of Bethlehem and its inns were filled to capacity. All the inns were filled because Caesar Augustus, the Roman leader, had ordered a census taken and all of the citizens of the Roman Empire were required to return to their city of origin to be counted. Because of the circumstances surrounding the birth of Jesus, many Christians display a Nativity scene at Christmas. The scene usually depicts Baby Jesus on a bed of hay, along with his mother and father, Mary and Joseph, surrounded by animals, angels, shepherds (who were the first to be told about the birth by angels), and the three wise men who brought gifts to honor Jesus. Although the holiday is traditionally observed by Christians, over the years it has become a cultural celebration worldwide that many non-religious people also partake in. Most people celebrate by decorating a Christmas tree, sharing a meal, and exchanging gifts with family and friends. Some of the secular symbols of Christmas include evergreen trees, candy canes, and yule logs. People enjoy singing Christmas carols, such as The Twelve Days of Christmas.
