Discussion of Christopher Newport's Admissions Standards: Christopher Newport is a public university located in Southeastern Virginia. The university's admissions have become more selective in recent years, and in 2016, 62% of applicants were admitted. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that the majority of successful applicants had high school GPAs of "B+" or better, combined SAT scores of about 1050 or higher, and ACT composite scores of 21 or better. A significant percentage of successful applicants had grades up in the "A" range. If you have strong grades but middling SAT or ACT scores, don't worry. Christopher Newport University has test-optional admissions for students who have a 3.5 or higher GPA (on a 4.0 scale) or who rank in the top 10% of their high school class. When it comes to your academic record, grades don't tell the whole story. The university likes to see that you have taken challenging high school courses. Success in Advanced Placement, IB, Honors, and other rigorous courses will strengthen your application. Also, Christopher Newport will consider the trend of your grades--grades that have improved over the years will make a better impression than grades that are on a downward slope. Numerical measures such as grades and standardized test scores are just one part of the Christopher Newport application. This is why you'll notice rejected and waitlisted students mixed in with accepted students in the middle of the graph. CNU uses the Common Application, and the admissions folks will be looking to see that you have written an engaging essay and participated in interesting extracurricular activities. You can further strengthen your application by submitting an optional teacher evaluation and doing an optional interview. The latter is a great way to demonstrate interest. Students who are applying for certain scholarships will need to submit two additional short-answer essays. Finally, CNU has three options for admission: early decision, early action, and regular decision. Applying early has benefits including receiving an admission decision months before regular decision applicants. If you are certain that Christopher Newport is your top-choice school, early decision is an excellent way to show your true interest in the school, and it can also improve your chances of being admitted.
