Clark Atlanta University Description:

Clark Atlanta University, CAU, is a young school that was formed in 1988 with the consolidation of Clark College and Atlanta University. Clark College, founded in 1869, was a four-year liberal arts college, and Atlanta University, founded in 1865, offered graduate degrees only. The consolidated university has quickly made a name for itself and frequently appears on lists of the country's best historically Black colleges and universities. Recent bad press may hurt those rankings -- in 2009 the university fired a quarter of its faculty without following well-established procedures related to tenure (read more). On the athletic front, the Clark Atlanta Panthers compete in the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division II Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Popular sports include football, basketball, volleyball, track and field, and tennis.
