Data courtesy of Cappex. Discussion of Cleveland State University's Admissions Standards: The scattergram above is a bit deceptive because it presents very few rejected students. The reality is that roughly a third of all applicants to Cleveland State University will not get in. Successful applicants tend to have grades and standardized test scores that are average or better. Note that the university does not use the SAT or ACT writing sections as part of the admissions decision. So what exactly does it take to be admitted? According to the school's admissions website, in 2016 applicants had to have completed a college preparatory curriculum, have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.3 (out of 4.0), and have an ACT composite score of at least 16 or an SAT score (RW+M) of a 770. Meeting these minimum requirements, however, does not guarantee admission, and some programs at Cleveland State have a higher admissions bar. For the College of Education and Human Services (this includes Nursing), applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA and a 20 ACT composite score or 860 SAT (RW+M). For the College of Engineering, the bar is even higher: applicants will need a 2.7 GPA and a 23 ACT composite score or 1130 SAT reading+math. Students seeking a degree in music have an additional requirement of an audition. In general, Cleveland State admissions are more numeric than holistic. The application does not ask about extracurricular activities, nor does it require an essay. That said, the university does take into consideration the rigor of your high school courses, and the brief application does give applicants the opportunity to "share any additional information with the admissions committee" on a separate page. Applicants with marginal credentials would be wise to take advantage of this opportunity. You can use it to describe a special talent you possess, or to explain unique circumstances that may have affected your high school academic performance. Finally, keep in mind that Cleveland State University is an NCAA Division I school that competes in 16 varsity sports in the Horizon League. Athletes need to meet NCAA eligibility requirements in addition to those of the university.
