Coast Guard Academy Description:

The United States Coast Guard Academy has one of the lowest acceptance rates of any college in the country, private or public. Unlike the other federal military academies, the USCGA does not require a congressional nomination as part of the application process. Applicants are evaluated solely on their merits. Like the other academies, tuition is free but students must serve for five years after graduation. The Coast Guard Academy has an impressive 7 to 1 student/faculty ratio, and 80 percent of graduates go on to graduate school. Most graduates also choose to serve for more than the five-year commitment. The Academy is located in New London, Connecticut, adjacent to Connecticut College.
