Discussion of the College of the Atlantic's Admissions Standards:

As a member of the Eco League with a specialized mission, the College of the Atlantic tends to attract thoughtful, independent and conscientious students with strong high school records. COA is a small school so Cappex doesn't have a lot of admissions data. Nevertheless, the graph above gives a decent picture of the typical applicant. Most admitted students (green and blue dots) had GPA's of "B+" or higher, SAT scores of 1150 or better (RW+M), and ACT composite scores of 24 or better. A significant percentage of admitted had grades in the "A" range. Realize that SAT and ACT scores don't play a huge role in the admissions process -- College of the Atlantic has test-optional admissions. Your college preparatory coursework will play a much more important role in the admissions equation.

Note that there are a few red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) mixed in with the green and blue in the graph. This is because COA has holistic admissions and makes decisions based on more than empirical data. College of the Atlantic uses the Common Application, and the admissions folks will be looking for a strong application essay, meaningful extracurricular activities, and positive letters of recommendation. Also, College of the Atlantic takes into consideration the rigor of your high school courses, not just your grades. Finally, you can further strengthen your application by doing an optional interview (COA strongly recommends interviews since they help both applicants and the college learn more about each other).
