Grades and Standardized Test Scores for Colorado State:

Colorado State University's main campus in Fort Collins has a fairly high acceptance rate, but don't let that fool you. Successful applicants are still going to need solid standardized test scores and high school grades, and the majority of successful applicants are well above average on the academic front. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that most accepted students had high school GPAs of about 3.0 or higher, a combined SAT score of 1050 or higher, and an ACT composite score of 21 or higher. CSU likes to see applicants with a 3.25 GPA or higher, and nearly all students with solid "A" averages got in.

Keep in mind that high grades in challenging Advanced Placement, Honors, and International Baccalaureate classes will impress the admissions folks more than the same grades in easier classes. The rigor of your high school curriculum plays an important role in the admissions process. Also, if your grades aren't quite where they should be, CSU will be much more impressed by an upward rather than downward trend in your GPA.

Other Admissions Factors for Colorado State:

If your scores are borderline for CSU, keep in mind that there are a some accepted students with grades and test scores below the norm. You'll also notice a few red and yellow dots (rejected and waitlisted students) in the middle of the graph, so not all students with grades and test scores that were on target for Colorado State got in. This is because the Colorado State University has holistic admissions and considers each application individually. The CSU admissions folks want to see that you have participated in interesting extracurricular activities. Finally, CSU will consider your application essay and letters of recommendation if your academic record is questionable.

Note that CSU has a non-binding Early Action admission option. Applying early can often improve your chances of admission for it is a meaningful way to show your demonstrated interest. You'll also have the benefit of learning the admission decision by the end of December.

Students for whom English is not their first language will also need to demonstrate English language proficiency. The university prefers to see TOEFL scores of 79 on the internet-based exam or 550 on the paper exam, PTE Academic scores of 53 or higher, or an IELTS Academic score of 6.5 or better. Students can be admitted with scores below these numbers, but admission will be conditional and the students will need to take an English language class at Colorado State.
