Definition: A composite measure is a measuring device that combines more that one item in order to measure a concept that is too complex to be measured simply, or with one item. Scales and indexes are both composite measures. Several concepts, such as self-esteem, intelligence, satisfaction with services, or need for services often use composite measures. The different items are combined to create a single score which is used to represent the value for that concept.
