As with many other common verbs, the conjugation of poner, often translated as "to put" or "to place," is highly irregular. An Irregular verb does not follow the same conjugation rules as regular verbs. Both English and Spanish have irregular verbs and they can be tricky in both languages. Memorization is often the best trick for remembering irregular verb conjugations. Verbs based on poner that share its conjugation pattern include componer, disponer, exponer, imponer, oponer, proponer, reponer and suponer.

Irregular forms are shown below in boldface. Translations are given as a guide and in real life may vary with context.
