Discussion of Cornell College's Admissions Standards: Roughly two-thirds of all applicants to Cornell College will get in. The college's intense one-course-at a time curriculum tends to attract serious students, and the majority of successful applicants have grades and standardized test scores that are above average. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent students who received an acceptance letter. Most had SAT scores of 1050 or higher, an ACT composite of 21 or higher, and a high school average of a "B" or higher. Grades and test scores above these lower ranges will improve your chances, and you can see that a significant percentage of admitted students had grades in the "A" range. Note that there are a few red dots (rejected students) and yellow dots (waitlisted students) mixed in with the green and blue throughout the graph. Some students with grades and test scores that were on target for Cornell College did not get in. Note also that a few students were accepted with test scores and grades a bit below the norm. This is because Cornell College has holistic admissions and makes admissions decisions based on more than numbers. Cornell College uses the Common Application, and the admissions folks will be looking for a strong application essay and meaningful extracurricular activities. Also, while letters of recommendation are optional at Cornell College, they can help round out your application. Like most colleges, Cornell takes into consideration the rigor of your high school courses, not just your grades. Finally, if you are visiting campus, be sure to do an individual interview -- this is a good way for you and the college to learn more about each other, and to demonstrate interest.
