Freshmen applying the CSU system calculate their Eligibility Index using SAT score or ACT score and GPA. The GPA is based on grades earned in all approved college preparatory A-G courses after the 9th grade.

  • California high school graduates or California residents must have a minimum index of 2950 using SAT I scores or 694 using ACT scores.
  • For those who are out of state or didn't graduate from a California high school, a minimum index of 3570 is required using SAT I scores or 842 using ACT scores.
  • These figures may change from year to year, be sure to check their current requirements.

Cal State University-Channel Islands Admissions Graph

Most of the entering freshmen for fall 2016 and prior tool the old version of the SAT, on which these graphs are based. The new version is in effect for those entering in 2017.

Using the graph above, you can get a sense of your chances of being admitted. The green and blue dots represent accepted students. The majority of students who got in had averages in the "B" range or higher, SAT scores (RW+M) of 900 or higher, and ACT scores of 17 or higher. However, note that there are a few spots of red (rejected students) in the middle of the graph. Some students with grades and test scores on target for CSUCI still get rejected.

Unlike the University of California System, the California State University admission process is not holistic. Except for EOP students, applicants do not need to submit letters of recommendation or an application essay, and extracurricular involvement is not part of the standard application. Thus, the reason why an applicant with adequate scores and grades would be rejected tends to come down to issues such as insufficient college preparatory classes, an incomplete application, or some other disqualifying factor.
