Just half an hour east of Downtown LA, California State University, Los Angeles sits atop a hill overlooking the San Gabriel Mountains. The public research university is one of 23 campuses that make up the California State University system. Established in 1947, CSULA’s mascot is the Golden Eagle, which signifies the diversity of the college’s student body, although over 50% of students identify as Hispanic. CSULA was the first university in the country to establish a Chicano Studies department in 1968.

CSULA’s departments and programs are organized into eight colleges: College of Arts and Letters; College of Business and Economics; The Charter College of Education; College of Engineering Computer Science, and Technology; College of Health and Human Services; College of Natural and Social Sciences; College of Extended Studies and International Programs; The Honors College.

The Luckman Fine Arts Complex at CSULA

The Luckman Fine Arts Complex at CSULA

Luckman Fine Arts Complex, built in 1994, is the hub of dance, theatre, and performing arts on campus. At the center of Luckman is the Street of the Arts, CSULA’s main entrance. The red brick and concrete esplanade unite all venues within Luckman Fine Arts Complex.

Luckman Theatre at CSULA

The Luckman Theatre, part of the Luckman Fine Arts Complex, is a versatile performance venue that can be configured to seat anywhere from 500 to 1,152 people. The theater is home to one of Los Angeles's largest stages, and frequent music, dance, and theatrical performances can be enjoyed by both students and community members. The theater can also be rented for special events.

CSULA University Student Union

The University Student Union is the central hub for student activity. The building is home to The Center for Student Involvement, which facilitates the activities of Greek life and student organizations on campus. The Xtreme Fitness Center, the university’s primary fitness and recreation facility, is located in the basement of the Student Union. The center features cardio and weight-training equipment. Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, and Martial Arts are just a few classes that Xtreme offers. Also located in the basement, The Pit, is a recreation lounge that features billiard tables, table tennis, and a large television.

Located next to the University Student Union, the 120,000 sq. ft. Golden Eagle Building is home to the university’s food services. The food court, 600-seat conference center, the University Club Restaurant, and the University Bookstore are located inside the building as well. The food court features Carl’s Jr., El Pollo Loco, Kikka Sushi, Johny’s Kitchen, Rice Garden, and Juice It Up.

JFK Memorial Library is CSULA’s primary undergraduate library. The library consists of two, six-story buildings, Library North and Library Palmer Wing. The library is home to a few notable collections, like the Children’s Books Collection and the Atlas Collection, which contains over 200 historical and geographical atlases.

Jesse Owens stadium is home to the Golden Eagle Soccer and track teams. The track and field received a significant upgrade for the 1983 Olympics. Sponsored by ARCO, the new stadium was named in honor of 1936 Olympic athlete Jesse Owens. The stadium has a seating capacity of 5,000. CSULA is a member of the NCAA Division II California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Built in 2008, the Annenberg Integrated Sciences Complex houses a majority of the university’s science labs.  The first wing of the building, La Kretz Hall, has biology and kinesiology labs, to name a few. The second wing is home to the physical sciences, like organic chemistry, geology, and physics.

The three-story La Kretz Hall is a multidisciplinary facility. It is home to the departments of biology, biochemistry, chemistry, environmental sciences, geology, health and nutritional sciences, kinesiology, and microbiology.

Simpson Tower is home to the College of Business and Economics. The school offers bachelor degrees in Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, and Economics, and masters programs in Accounting, Economics, Information Systems, and Healthcare Management.

Martin Luther King Memorial Hall at the California State University Los Angeles. Marisa Benjamin

Martin Luther King Memorial Hall is home to the Dean’s Office and student services offices, as well as counseling and special education. In addition to classrooms, non-profit organization “Choice” is located inside King Hall. The organization aims to increase awareness of mental health in the Latino community.

The Stern School of Math and Science is one of two high schools located on the CSULA campus. Stern offers quality education to students who live in underserved areas. Employment and volunteer opportunities for CSULA students are available at Stern.

The Biological Science Building is one of the largest buildings on campus dedicated for a single department. In the building you can find a photography studio, green house, club meeting sites, and classrooms.

Located between Salazar Hall, Simpson Tower, and the Physical Sciences Building, Greenlee Plaza is a popular spot to relax, study, and socialize with peers between classes. The Plaza's features include artificial turf, tables, and Wi-Fi capabilities.

This mosaic along Salazar Hall’s exterior wall signifies CSULA’s dedication to Hispanic culture. The hall was named in honor of Ruben Salazar, a Los Angeles Times reporter who was killed in 1970 while covering a rally of Latino opposition to the Vietnam War. Today it is home to a variety of disciplines including finance, marketing, and social work. It is also the headquarters of the Applied Gerontology Institute Established in 2006, the Institute aims to improve the quality of care of older persons through education and training. Professors in the Schools of nursing, social work, sociology, and psychology collaborate in the institute.

Built in 2007, the Hertzberg-Davis Forensic Science Center is home to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Scientific Services Bureau and the Los Angeles Police Department Scientific Investigation Division, as well as CSULA’s Criminal Justice and Criminalistics programs.

Located on the north end of campus, student housing is split into two sections: Phase I and Phase II. Phase I consists of 92 2-bedroom apartments. Phase II consists of five “pods.” Each pod includes eight 2-bedroom apartments and 12, 4-bedroom apartments. A centrally located student center features a laundry room, game room, and study area.

Next to Phase I and Phase II, Golden Eagle Apartments offer upperclassmen alternative living options. Students can choose between two options: a single room in a double occupancy apartment, or a double room in a suite-style apartment. Each apartment has a bathroom and kitchen, and is fully furnished.  There is a laundry and recreation room located inside GEA.
