Cal State Northridge accepts around half of those who apply, and admission is within reach of many students with average grades and test scores. However, CSUN is impacted for undergraduate students and all freshman applicants must meet minimum standard criteria. There are supplementary admission criteria for non-local area students and those applying to an impacted major.

Each student calculates their Eligibility Index using their grade point average and ACT or SAT score. That will tell you whether you are eligible for admission to the CSU system. A higher Eligibility Index is required for those who aren't residents of California and who didn't graduate from a California high school.

The minimum eligibility for California residents applying for non-impacted majors for Fall 2017 was an ACT of 694 or SAT of 2900 for high schools in the local area and an ACT of 890 or SAT of 3700 for high schools outside of the local area. Impacted majors with higher criteria included Accountancy, Business, Biology, Cinema and Television Arts, Communication Studies, Health Administration, Public Health, Radiologic Sciences, Kinesiology, Music, and Psychology.

CSUN Admissions Graph

In the graph above, the green and blue dots represent students who got in. As you can see, most students who were accepted by this member of California State University System had grades in the "B-" range or higher, SAT scores (RW+M) of 850 or higher, and ACT scores of 16 or higher. However, note that there are some red data points (rejected students) scattered throughout the graph. Some students with grades and test scores that seem to be on target for CSUN were rejected.

What were the probably reasons for these rejections? Unlike the University of California System, the California State University admission process is not holistic. Except for EOP students, applicants do not need to submit letters of recommendation or an application essay, and extracurricular involvement is not part of the standard application. Thus, the reason why an applicant with adequate scores and grades would be rejected tends to come down to a couple factors such as insufficient college preparatory classes or an incomplete application.
