Discussion of Lehman College's Admissions Standards: The City University of New York's Lehman College, one of the 11 senior colleges in the CUNY network, has a low acceptance rate, but this is more a measure of a large applicant pool than an overly high bar for admission. In recent years. roughly a quarter to a third of all applicants have received acceptance letters. To get in, applicants should have standardized test scores and high school GPAs that are average or better. In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent students who were admitted. You can see that the great majority had combined SAT scores (RW+M) of 950 or higher, a composite ACT score of 18 or higher, and a high school average of "B-" or better. You'll also notice that there's a lot of red (rejected students) mixed in with the green and the blue on the bottom and left of the graph. In the lower score and grade ranges, many students were rejected with grades and test scores that were similar to students who were accepted. This shows that the lower range scores are certainly no guarantee of admission, and a candidate has the best chance of getting in with a combined SAT score of roughly 1050 or higher, and a GPA of a 3.0 (a solid "B") or higher. At the lower ends of the ranges, admission decisions will ultimately be made be factors other than grades and test scores. The admissions officers review applications holistically, and decisions are based on more than numerical data. The CUNY application (used by all of the CUNY campuses) asks for an application essay as well as letters of recommendation. If these are strong and reveal that the applicant shows promise of college success, they can help offset grades and standardized test scores that are less than ideal. If you're on the lower end of the acceptance range, you'd be wise to put a lot of thought and care into writing your essays, and be sure to pick a recommender who knows you well and can speak to your strengths. Finally, Lehman College, like all selective colleges, will be looking at the rigor of your high school courses, not just your grades. If you've successfully completed Finally, you can further strengthen your application by doing an optional interview.
