I'm sure it is the big, watery eyes that makes my heart do a double flip when I see a little dog. Or perhaps it is the wagging tail. I don't know, but I find all dogs cute. From tiny, adorable little pups to fully grown Dalmatians, they are cuteness on four legs. I have often discussed about the cuteness of dogs with many dog lovers and everyone of them agrees that dogs can pull at your heartstrings with just a look.

Some Dog Breeds Are Cuter Than the Others

So what is it that makes dogs appear so cute? Some say if you want oodles of cuteness, you should go for specific breeds like the Yorkshire terrier, a Pomeranian, a Pekingese, or the adorable Shih Tzu. They are so cute, you'd want to squeeze them hard till they yelp with fright. These tiny dog breeds make your world lively and exciting with their unparalleled zest for life.

If you find dogs with big, round eyes unbearably cute, you'd find Labrador Retrievers, American Pit Bull Terriers, Basset Hounds, the Bull Dog, and the Siberian Husky. Personally, I love the Beagle. It has those adorable, big, watery eyes that cannot be ignored.

The Science of Cuteness: The Baby Schema Effect That Makes Dogs Cute

You'd wonder why dogs and puppies are considered cute animals, while a snake, or a bat don't necessarily evoke the same emotion within us? Why do some people prefer to keep cats than mice?

While dogs have been known to be man's best friend since the beginning of civilization, their cuteness is nature's way of endearing them to humans. Evolution has wired humans in such a way that humans find their own offspring cute. The big head, big round eyes, and tiny limbs, and toothless grin of a little baby look so cute to us, that parents would happily nurse their babies till they grow up.

In 1943, ethologist Konrad Lorenz in his research proposed his theory about baby schema, the science behind cuteness in animals. Baby schema is a set of infantile features that are perceived as cute and motivates caretaking behavior in humans. By the same logic, animals that have physical features that fit human parameters of cuteness -- large head, big eyes, chubby cheeks, tiny body, and the like -- trigger the protective instinct. In medical terms, it is the baby schema that activates the mesocorticolimbic pathway of our neurological system, which activate the care-taking instincts in humans. So if you find dogs cute, that is only because nature has designed us to want to extend our caring love towards dogs and puppies.

5 Reasons Why I Love Dogs: And This Is Not Because They Are Adorably Cute!

Actually, I can come up with more than 5 reasons why I love dogs, but if you think about it, dogs give you a million reasons why they are such wonderful companions.

1. Dogs Can Make a Gloomy Day Look Awesome.

Had a rough day at work? Fought with your boyfriend? However bad your day, your dog is the only one who will greet your with happy tail. He will not try to assess your mood before greeting you with happy barks.

Spend five minutes with your dog, and any gloomy day will look cheerful again.

2. Dogs ensure you get your exercise.

These fidgety little creatures can hardly wait to go for a walk. And if your mutt enjoys running around, he will make sure you get plenty of exercise. Playing with dogs is a fun way to workout without feeling exhausted. They are your best fitness pals.

3. Dogs are selfless attendants.

All you need to say is "Fetch!" and your dog would be bounding off the room to get what you want. No whining, no lethargy. Dogs can also be trained to help disabled people. They will happily do the job if you simply reward them with a pat on their head.

4. Dogs are excellent guards.

With their keen sense of sight and smell, dogs are the most alert, watch keepers. They can help you keep burglars, and bullies away.

Small children can be left safe with pets as they are great caretakers in the absence of the parent.

5. Dogs help to instill patience, kindness, and generosity in kids.

Children learn a lot from dogs. Kids learn to be great caregivers to dogs, and at the same time, benefit from the dog's amiable nature. Dogs and kids get along very well, especially if kids have been with dogs since childhood. They have the ability to make kids feel secure, and happy.
