Elkins, a town of about 8,000, has a strong arts and music presence, with several music festivals throughout the year. Also called D&E, the college was founded in 1904 and is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. The small college supports its roughly 800 students with a healthy student/faculty ratio of 12 to 1. For student involvement outside of the classroom, D&E is home to 35 student clubs and organizations including one national fraternity.

There are several academic groups, athletic/recreation organizations, and fine art, music, and dance clubs. The Department of Fine and Performing Arts and the Augusta Heritage Center are a big part of campus life, bringing music and entertainment to D&E students. The center offers week-long (and longer) courses in such areas as Swing, Bluegrass, Irish, Cajun, and early American music.
