Learn about our Editorial Process Updated on February 26, 2020 Descansar is a Spanish verb meaning to rest, and in context it can also mean to sleep or to take a break. Descansar is conjugated regularly, in the same way as other -ar verbs, like remansar (to stagnate), amansar (to tame), and transar (to make a transaction). Below you'll find conjugations for the indicative tenses (present, preterite, imperfect, and future), the subjunctive tenses (present and imperfect), the imperative mood, the past participle, and the gerund. You might notice that descansar is made up of the prefix des-, which means to undo an action, and cansar, which means to tire or wear out. So descansar can be thought of as having the literal meaning of "to un-tire." Words related to descansar include descanso ("rest" as a noun, also "break" or "time off"), descansillo (landing at the top or bottom of a staircase), and descansadero (place for resting). Present Indicative of Descansar The present indicative is the most basic tense and is used for current or habitual actions. Yo descanso I rest Yo descanso los domingos. Tú descansas You rest Tú descansas los ojos. Usted/él/ella descansa You/he/she rests Él descansa en el sillón. Nosotros descansamos We rest Nosotros descansamos toda la noche. Vosotros descansáis You rest Vosotros descansáis durante el día. Ustedes/ellos/ellas descansan You/they rest Ellos descansan del estrés de la vida diaria. Descansar Preterite The preterite tense is similar to the simple past tense of English (the one that ends in "-ed" for regular verbs). Yo descansé I rested Yo descansé los domingos. Tú descansaste You rested Tú descansaste los ojos. Usted/él/ella descansó You/he/she rested Él descansó en el sillón. Nosotros descansamos We rested Nosotros descansamos toda la noche. Vosotros descansasteis You rested Vosotros descansasteis durante el día. Ustedes/ellos/ellas descansaron You/they rested Ellos descansaron del estrés de la vida diaria. Imperfect Indicative Form of Descansar The imperfect is a type of past tense that doesn't have a single-word English equivalent. It is often translated as "used to + verb" or "was/were + verb + -ing," and is used for actions that don't have a specific end time. Yo descansaba I was resting Yo descansaba los domingos. Tú descansabas You were resting Tú descansabas los ojos. Usted/él/ella descansaba You/he/she was resting Él descansaba en el sillón. Nosotros descansábamos We were resting Nosotros descansábamos toda la noche. Vosotros descansabais You were resting Vosotros descansabais durante el día. Ustedes/ellos/ellas descansaban You/they were Ellos descansaban del estrés de la vida diaria. Descansar Future Tense Yo descansaré I will rest Yo descansaré los domingos. Tú descansarás You will rest Tú descansarás los ojos. Usted/él/ella descansará You/he/she will rest Él descansará en el sillón. Nosotros descansaremos We will rest Nosotros descansaremos toda la noche. Vosotros descansaréis You will rest Vosotros descansaréis durante el día. Ustedes/ellos/ellas descansarán You/they will rest Ellos descansarán del estrés de la vida diaria. Periphrastic Future of Descansar The periphrastic future is more informal than the simple future. It is so common in some regions that it has mostly replaced the simple future in everyday speech. Yo voy a descansar I am going to rest Yo voy a descansar los domingos. Tú vas a descansar You are going to rest Tú vas a descansar los ojos. Usted/él/ella va a descansar You/he/she is going to rest Él va a descansar en el sillón. Nosotros vamos a descansar We are going to rest Nosotros vamos a descansar toda la noche. Vosotros vais a descansar You are going to rest Vosotros vais a descansar durante el día. Ustedes/ellos/ellas van a descansar You/they are going to rest Ellos van a descansar del estrés de la vida diaria. Descansar Conditional Indicative The conditional tense is sometimes known as the hypothetical future. As with "would," it is used for actions that would occur if certain conditions (which don't have to explicitly stated) are met. Yo descansaría I would rest Yo descansaría los domingos, pero necesito trabajar. Tú descansarías You would rest Tú descansarías los ojos, pero no te molestan. Usted/él/ella descansaría You/he/she would rest Él descansaría en el sillón si fuera cómodo. Nosotros descansaríamos We would rest Nosotros descansaríamos toda la noche si no hubiera ruido. Vosotros descansaríais You would rest Vosotros descansaríais durante el día si hubiera cortinas oscuras. Ustedes/ellos/ellas descansarían You/they would rest Ellos descansarían del estrés de la vida diaria, pero no tienen tiempo. Present Progressive/Gerund Form of Descansar The gerund is used with estar to form the progressive tenses, where the emphasis is on the ongoing nature of an action. Gerunds are not used as adjectives, as is common in English. Gerund of Descansar: descansando resting -> Él está descansando en el sillón. Past Participle of Descansar As an adjective, the past participle of descansar typically means "rested" or "relaxed." It can also be used to indicate that something is unchallenging, such as una tarea descansada referring to an easy task. Participle of Descansar: descansado rested -> Él ha descansado en el sillón. Present Subjunctive of Descansar Subjunctive verb forms in Spanish are seldom used as the main verb of a sentence. They typically follow the relative pronoun que in a dependent clause. Que usted/él/ella descanse That you/he/she rest Ana quiere que él descanse en el sillón. Que nosotros descansemos That we rest Juan quiere que nosotros descansemos toda la noche. Que vosotros descanséis That you rest Es difícil que vosotros descanséis durante el día. Que ustedes/ellos/ellas descansen That you/they rest Victoria espera que ellos descansen del estrés de la vida diaria. Imperfect Subjunctive Forms of Descansar The two forms of the imperfect subjunctive are interchangeable. The first option is used more often, especially in speech.
