Make Sure You Are Connected to the Internet

It may sound obvious, but make sure you have a reliable internet connection before you attempt a download. Both automatic and manual updates for LibreOffice require an online connection.

Option A (Recommended): How to Choose Automatic Updates in LibreOffice

This method is your easiest option for updating LibreOffice.

First, automatic updates should be default. If you have not periodically seen an icon in the upper right with an update message, you may want to double check your settings. Check this by selecting Tools - Options - LibreOffice - Online Update.

You will be asked to specify how often the program seeks online updates. Options include Every Day, Every Week, Every Month, or whenever an online connection is detected. You can also opt to check for updates now.

Again, when an update is available, an icon in the menu bar pops up. Click this icon or message to begin downloading available updates.

If LibreOffice is configured to download the files automatically, the download starts immediately.

Option B: How to Choose Manual Updates for Libreoffice

While I consider automatic updates best, it is also fairly simple to manually update your LibreOffice programs. You just have to remember it yourself!

Since automatic updates are probably the default setting on your installation of LibreOffice, you should first disable those by selecting Tools - Options - LibreOffice - Online Update.

If you disable automatic update checks, the icon referred to in the previous step is removed from the menu bar.

Next select Help - Check for Updates - Download and Install the Files.

You can also bookmark and visit the LibreOffice download site to get the latest version of the suite.

How to Download and Apply a LibreOffice Update

Once an update file is downloaded automatically or manually, the download file should be stored on your computer's desktop by default.

You can change this default location by selecting Tools - Options - LibreOffice - Online Update.

Click the file and select Install to apply the update. You may need to unzip or extract the file depending on your operating system.

When the update is complete you should see a confirmation message.

Note: You can save space on your computer by deleting the download file after it is fully installed.

How to Update Extensions

It is possible you may need to manually update LibreOffice extensions from time to time.

Extensions are optional features you can install to the core LibreOffice suite, to expand what it can do. Here are some suggestions if you are interested in checking this tool out:

Best LibreOffice Extensions for General Productivity

Best LibreOffice Extensions for Teachers and Students

Best LibreOffice Extensions for Writers and Communicators

Best LibreOffice Extensions for Business or Management

Again, extensions can cause glitches if they do not stay updated.

The good news is, running either update method should also update your extensions.

If you do experience hiccups with those extensions, you can update them by visiting Tools - Extension Manager - Updates - Check for Updates - Select an extension. You should see an option to get the latest updates.
