Learn about our Editorial Process Updated on July 20, 2021 East Tennessee State University is a public university located in Johnson City, Tennessee, a community nestled among the mountains in the northeast corner of the state. The university is made up of six colleges, and undergraduates can choose from 112 academic programs. Students can also participate in some of ETSU's more than 170 campus organizations, many of which emphasize service and leadership. High achieving student should check out the Honors College both for the opportunity to receive full scholarship support and special academic opportunities. In athletics, the ETSU Buccaneers compete in the NCAA Division I Southern Conference. Both men's and women's basketball has met with recent successes. Other popular choices include softball, baseball, track and field, tennis, and soccer. ETSU is a moderately large university with just over 14,000 students including about 3,000 graduate students. The school has a 15 to 1 student/faculty ratio, and the most popular majors are nursing, psychology, and business. Acceptance Rate During the 2019-20 admissions cycle, East Tennessee State University had an acceptance rate of 78%. This means that for every 100 students who applied, 78 were accepted and 22 were rejected. This makes ETSU's admissions process only slightly selective. The ACT is far more popular than the SAT in Tennessee, and during the 2019-20 admissions cycle, only 2% of applicants (37 students) submitted SAT scores. For the evidence-based reading and writing section, 50% of students who enrolled at ETSU scored between 460 and 580, while 25% scored at or below 460 and 25% scored at or above 580. On the math section, 50% of matriculated students scored between 480 and 590, while 25% scored at or below 480 and 25% scored at or above 590. Applicants with a composite SAT score of 1170 or greater will have particularly competitive chances at East Tennessee State University. Requirements Although students are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores during the ETSU admissions process, they may want to submit scores anyway. SAT or ACT scores are required to be considered for scholarships, and scores can also help make sure you get placed into the right classes. Finally, a few academic programs at ETSU do required test scores for admission. The now obsolete SAT essay exam and SAT Subject Tests are not required. ACT Scores and Requirements Although ETSU had test-optional admissions, the majority of students submit ACT scores. During the 2019-20 admissions cycle, 87% of matriculated students submitted ACT scores. The middle 50% of students admitted to East Tennessee State University received a composite ACT score between 20 and 25, while 25% scored at or above 25, and 25% scored below 20. Requirements While ETSU does not require students to submit ACT scores for most programs, the great majority of students do provide scores because the ACT can be used for awarding scholarships and for class placement. The university does not require the optional ACT writing test. GPA and Class Rank ETSU hasn't published their Common Data Set in recent years, but earlier reports suggest that roughly 75% of matriculated students were in the top half of their graduating high school class, and the average high school GPA was around 3.25. The high school transcript of a typical student is filled with A's and B's and may have an occasional C.
