Edward the Elder was also known as:

King Edward. The label "the Elder" wasn't given to him until the tenth century, when scholars found it necessary to distinguish him from the next king of England to be called Edward, known as Edward the Martyr. Edward the Elder is the first king of England to be called Edward, and he should not be confused with the Norman King Edward I.

Edward the Elder was known for:

Conquering territory that had been held by the Danes and extending the authority of the kings of Wessex over most of England.

Occupations:

King
Military Leader

Places of Residence and Influence:

Britain: England

Important Dates:

Born: c. 871
Crowned: June 8, 900
Died: July 17, 924

About Edward the Elder:

Succeeding his father Alfred the Great to the throne, Edward managed to consolidate most of the territory that would become England. Much of his success would not have been possible without the help of his elder sister, Aethelflaed, who as ruler of Mercia joined forces with Edward in several significant campaigns. Edward married three times and had 15 children (or, according to some sources, one of his marriages was not legitimate and he only had 14 children). Three of his sons became kings after him.
