'General Hospital' Character Elizabeth Webber Spencer

She's been a fan favorite since her introduction in 1997

Elizabeth Webber is a central character on "General Hospital," a mother and nurse who has a knack for getting herself involved in love triangles.

The role was originated by and created for actress Rebecca Herbst, who debuted on the show in 1997. For much of her early tenure, Elizabeth bounced back and forth between half-brothers Lucky Spencer and Nikolas Cassadine, which played out over several marriages and a few pregnancies.

She's also been part of an ongoing triangle with Jason Morgan and Sam McCall and had a marriage to Ric Lansing thrown in just for good measure.

From the beginning, Elizabeth was a bit of a schemer, trying to steal Lucky away from her sister Sarah when they were teenagers. That inclination to cause trouble has landed her in more than a few sticky situations over the years.

Here are some of the plot twists that have made Elizabeth a popular character among longtime "General Hospital" fans.

Elizabeth was born on November 3, 1982, the daughter of Dr. Jeff Webber. Since Jeff was the son of Dr. Steve Hardy, this makes Audrey Hardy her grandmother. Elizabeth and her sister Sarah came to live with Audrey when Elizabeth was 15.

Though she had an immediate attraction to Lucky Spencer, Lucky had eyes for Sarah. Sarah, meanwhile, liked Nikolas. Elizabeth tried to make her sister look bad, but her attempts failed.

Elizabeth Webber's Rape

When Elizabeth was raped walking home from a school dance, it was a pivotal turning point for the character, still a teenager. It also drew parallels to one of the most controversial "General Hospital" storylines ever: the rape of Laura Webber by Luke Spencer. Luke and Laura, of course, went on to become one of the first so-called "super couples" in daytime television.

But for Lucky Spencer, Luke and Laura’s son, seeing his young friend coping with the aftermath of this violent experience opened old wounds and forced some difficult conversations with his parents.  Elizabeth and Lucky fell in love, a relationship that was on-again, off-again for several years.

The story of Elizabeth's rape was controversial but was eventually recognized by critics and fans of the show for its thoughtful portrayal of a sensitive issue.

Elizabeth Meets Jason Morgan

When it appeared Lucky was killed in a fire, Elizabeth was distraught. But this opened the door for another long-lasting relationship for Elizabeth, with Jason Morgan. He saved her from a second attack, and she hid him in her art studio after he was shot. But repeated attempts on Jason’s life that put Elizabeth in danger led him to leave town to protect her.

He departed just before the discovery that Lucky Spencer was alive.

Elizabeth Webber's Marriages and Children

She's been involved with Nikolas, Jason, Lucky, Ric Lansing and Franco over the past few years, but she's only been married to two of her paramours: Lucky (three times) and Ric (twice).

Elizabeth's three children, all boys, were Cameron, Jake, and Aiden Spencer.

Cameron is Zander Smith's son, the result of a one-night stand. Lucky agreed to help Elizabeth raise Cameron as the couple's own son.

Jake is the son of Jason Morgan, but Elizabeth let Lucky think he was Jake's father for a long time. Jake was believed killed in 2011 after he was struck by a car driven by a drunken Luke Spencer.  But in 2015, it was revealed that he was alive, a captive on Cassadine Island.

Aiden Spencer also is the son of Lucky Spencer, although it appeared for a time that he was fathered by Nikolas.
